Surprising Europe
26 Mar 2010

The documentary Surprising Europe, the life and times of Ssuuna Golooba tells the story of the successful photojournalist Ssuuna Golooba. He left his wife, children and job in Uganda, and moved to Europe in the hope of a better future. There, he realized Europe was not very eager to welcome him.

The life in Europe as an undocumented migrant is not what he had imagined. After the fire at Schiphol detention centre where eleven undocumented migrants died, Ssuuna decided he cannot stay silent. He wants to tell his people the truth. He picks up his camera and starts making a film about the real life of Africans in Europe. But will his people believe him?

The documentary follows Ssuuna during several years in Amsterdam and on his first trip back to Uganda where he presents the pilot of the television series to the audience for the first time.

It has has been broadcasted on Al Jazeera's documentary programme Witness on December 16 2010, and on the Dutch Ned 2 on  April 21 2011.
