Ssuuna's story

Surprising Europe
26 Mar 2010
NETHERLANDS

Ssuuna Golooba is the initiator of the Surprising Europe project. He was a photojournalist in Uganda when he decided to seek his fortune in Europe. The tough reality of life in Europe as an undocumented migrant is not what he had imagined. Here's his story.

After the fire at Schiphol detention centre where eleven undocumented migrants died, Ssuuna decided he couldn't stay silent. Fueled by his own experiences and seeing the struggle of friends who were living the clandestine life, Ssuuna deciced that it was time to tell his story. Watch the documentary about Ssuuna that was broadcasted by Al Jazeera English in two parts.

Ssuuna's personal story

Ssuuna shares his personal story on SurprisingEurope.com in his own blog. He writes about his experiences and encourages people to share their migration experiences.

Reactions

Ssuuna got many reactions on his documentary. Here's a selection:

Dear Mr. Golooba,
I just watched your documentary and your story on Al Jazeera. It was absolutely brilliant and you are a true inspiration. I am originally from India and am currently graduate student in Berlin, Germany. While I study politics and hope to do my PhD one day, I do also aspire to be a journalist who deals with REAL and IMPORTANT issues like you do.
Sincerely,
Somdeep

Thank God you are alive. its never too late to do good, restart your life. Be blessed

Hey Ssuuna,
I just finished watching your documentary on AlJeezera's Listening Post, and I wanted to say it was really touching. What you did took a lot of courage. Anyways, I just thought I'd send you a message. Hope all is going well in Uganda.

Oliotia Ssuuna,
I watched your documentary this evening, after my husband advised me (he too is from Uganda and has been without papers for years). You really did a great job on opening the gates to starting the conversation, not just on the risks of moving to Europe from Africa (because lets face it, as long as there is a change at a better life, many will take the change when they get it), but also the humanity and human rights of those living among us that we as a sociaty just let suffer. We as white Europeans can learn so much from you if we allowed ourself to open up and work together. I know I am a bit idealist, but this documentary really inspired me and I hope for you this is not the final work, but just the beginning. Thank you for enlightening my evening and who knows what may come!
Best wishes,
Paula

Dear Mr Golooba , your story is an inspiration to me as someone who also lived in netherland for four years ,i say you call it what it is , and those Africans who go home and spend all they ever worked for to impress their countrymen, and make them feel they are from heaven should also know thay are part of the problem and if every African   did what you are doing , i think we would have our dignity intact and not suffer under a system cich critisizes others of Human Rights violations , but themselves cannot provide the basics that can fulfill our human dignity.
